Today we will talk about world soil day
Soil:- The upper layer of earth a black or dark brown material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains clay and rock particles.
Soil also commonly referred to as earth or dirt, is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids and organisams that together support.
The life of plants and soil organism.
There are many types of soil but four main types is :-
1. Sandy soil :- It is usually formed by the breakdown or fragmentation of rocks like granite, limestone and quartz.
2. Silt soil :- it is also used in agricultural practices to improve soil fertility. Silt soil have much smaller particles compared to sandy soil and made up of rock and other minerals particles.
3. Clay soil :- It is heaviest type of soil. It has very good water storage qualities and make it hard for moisture and air to penetrate into it. It is very sticky to touch when wet but smooth when dried.
4. Loamy soil :- It is combination of sand, sily and clay. It has the ability to retain moisture and nutrients. It also has higher calcium and pH levels because of it's inorganic origins.
Soil aupports life of the plants by providing essential nutrients to plants. Another factor soil reduces climate changes by presenting or even increasing soil organic carbon.
World soil day is held annually on 5 December as a mean to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and management of soil resources. The main goal of the day is to increase public awareness of the significant environment issues that soil degradation can lead to such as erosion, the loss of organic matter and a drops in soil fertility.
History:
In June 2013, the FAO Conference endorsed World Soil Day and later approached the 68th United National General Assembly and requested for its official adoption. Towards the end of 2013, the UN General Assembly designated December 5, 2014, as the first official World Soil Day. Link for World soil 🌎 day for youtube World soil day
Significance:
"World Soil Day 2023 (WSD) and its campaign aim to raise awareness of the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. WSD is a unique global platform that not only celebrates soils but also empowers and engages citizens around the world to improve soil health," wrote the United Nations on its official website. The UN further added sustainable soil management practices minimum tillage, crop rotation, organic matter addition, and cover cropping can improve soil health and reduce soil erosion and enhance water infiltration and storage. "These practices also preserve soil biodiversity, improve fertility, and contribute to carbon sequestration, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change," added the UN.
